Depict Project: Task 2 – Devise and pre planning a moving image fiction production

For this project I plan to create a short animation showing a stick figure, created by a young woman, who becomes a superhero.
The main choice of genre is fantasy within of slice of life plot. My intended aim is to create a short film that will bring a smile to people’s face, and for animation lovers to watch – especially if they’re taking a break from work – to help get creative juices flowing.

When coming up with my idea I watched a few videos of short animation to see what they had in them – to see the layout of a narrative arch – so I could understand how much to have in my animation. When I knew what I needed, and wanted, I started writing up my scripts (see below) and in end I did four drafts before settling on my forth draft.

ADVENTURE OF SPARK – Draft 1

INT. CLASSROOM, DAY

The sound of tapping a keyboard can be heard. Then it stops, to be replaced by the sound of a book opening. FADE IN with the sound of a pencil drawing to a LONG SHOT of Katie sitting in her class chair doodling. CUT to CLOSE UP SHOT of Katie’s face as she concentrates. CUT to an OVER THE SHOULDER shot where Katie’s sketchbook is visible. CUT to a CLOSE UP SHOT of the sketch of Spark who winks at Katie. CUT to a CLOSE UP SHOT of Katie, who looks confused before rubbing her eyes. Spark looks up as a word appears in the top right of the screen. The first word is WALK. Sparks walks forward two steps. The second word is JUMP. Sparks jumps. The third word is BLOCK. Deadend walks on screen.

DEADEND:
ROAR!

Deadend fires a blast of fire to which Spark counteracts with a shield. Then the final word is FIGHT. Spark uses her power to make a cage behind Deadend. Using a blast of charge Deadend is knocked into the cage, and Spark locks the door. She looks to Katie before winking again.
CUT to a CLOSE UP shot of Katie who smiles.

ADVENTURE OF SPARK – Draft 2

Dark screen. The sound of tapping a keyboard can be heard. Then it stops. The sound of a book is pulled out and opened. FADE IN to a long shot of Katie sitting in classroom doodling as her pencil draws in her sketchbook. CUT to a CLOSE UP SHOT of Katie’s face. CUT to a POINT OF VIEW SHOT of the sketchbook. CUT to a Close up of Spark.

SPARK:
Ollo!

CUT to a CLOSE UP SHOT of a confused Katie who rubs her eyes. CUT back to a CLOSE UP SHOT of Spark who looks up as a word appear on the page. It says WALKS. Spark walks a couple of steps. A second word appears. It says JUMP. Spark jumps up onto another platform. A third word appears. It says BLOCK. The sound of heavy footsteps are heard off screen. Deadend appears.

DEADEND:
(ROARING SOUND EFFECT)

Deadend throws a fireball at Spark who counteracts the attack by making a shield. A final word appears FIGHT. Nodding Spark uses a heavy charged ball to throw at Deadend who falls back knocked out.

SPARK:
Yippe!

Spark does a little victory dance. CUT to Katie who smiles.

ADVENTURE OF SPARK – Draft 3

To create my film I’m only going to need one actor to play Katie, who I could play as, and the rest is just stop motion animation.
Since my film will mostly be done by animation I won’t need to worry too much about filming in public, equipment, actors, crew, or weather (except when filming Katie). However I will need to consider copyright and if my idea will break any of the rules. To my knowledge the only thing that could break the rules is the music choice – therefore to get around this I plan to use royalty free music (and state where I got this from which is one of the rules in the agreement – set by Royalty free music companies). For Katie’s scene I plan to film in the classroom – since this is where I have set my script.
Though my acting is covered, I may need help with someone handling the camera. In order to have clearance to film in the classroom I will discuss with my tutor if this can be allowed. With regards to time the only thing that shall be most time consuming is the animation making process – especially if it’s stop motion.
